Discussion: Use GEM4D to create a surface mesh from a strings file
Trajec3D can only read triangulation/mesh/solid files, but GEM4D can read a far greater range of files. If a pit shell is provided as a string file, Trajec3D will generate an error message: "File not loaded. Action cancelled or no triangulations were found in the DXF-file, the start-up mesh will be loaded".
The best option is always to request the original triangulation files but if that is not available, a acceptable mesh can normally be generated in GEM4D from the lines or contours by using the steps below:
Load the strings DXF-file with "Ribbon => Mesh => Load DXF".
Check the "Ribbon => Mesh => Mesh settings => Line vertices" box to see how many line vertices are available.
Increase the number of vertices with "Top toolbar => Blue toolbox icon => Split lines into fixed lengths", as the surface fitting only uses the available points and too few points will result in an unsatisfactory mesh.
Create an estimated mesh surface with "Top toolbar => Yellow toolbox icon => Create a surface (Delaunay2D)", and read each question carefully before answering.
For this particular application, always select "No" for the "Surface draping options" pop-up form, as the triangulation surface should be draped directly from above.
